Frequently Asked Questions:

For the purposes of this project, a Human Rights Violation refers to any act by a person or institution acting on behalf of the state—such as police, military, government officials, public healthcare workers, or other state agents—that infringes upon the basic rights and freedoms of a transgender or gender diverse person.

We are only documenting violations committed by state actors. This includes, for example, arbitrary arrests, denial of healthcare, harassment, physical or sexual violence, or discriminatory treatment in public services—when these are carried out by people in official positions of power.

Please do not include incidents carried out by private individuals, even if they are serious. This project specifically tracks how states fail in their duty to protect trans people, or actively harm them.

This survey is open only to selected experts and representatives from member organisations of the African Trans Network.

You have been invited to participate because of your trusted role in your community and your experience in monitoring, documenting, or responding to human rights violations affecting trans and gender diverse people. Your insight ensures that the data we collect is credible, timely, and grounded in real experiences.

By limiting access to verified members of our network, we are able to maintain the integrity of the information and protect the safety of the communities we serve. Please do not share access to this survey with others, even within your organization, unless they have also been officially invited to report.
